Lorilee Jordahl

Dear Hawthorne Families,

We have completed all of our data reviews and the acceleration block is starting this week. During the acceleration block, a small number of students meet with a specialist to receive more targeted reading instruction. Our groups are fluid and meet every six to eight weeks to review student progress. Some students may exit the group while others may stay in the intervention longer. Specialists will always contact parents before they begin their intervention.

Hawthorne Makes Wishes Come True
During the weeks October 4 through 15, Hawthorne Students will raise funds for the Make-A-Wish, Illinois Foundation.  We have two children and family members who have had wishes come true through Make-A-Wish and now they are paying it forward and making other children with life threatening illnesses dreams come true. Stars will be available for $1.00 during lunch time Tue, Wed, and Friday this week and Tue, Wed, and Friday the week of Oct 11th. Children can give a donation of $1.00 and place their name on a star or we will have special stars so children can honor or remember someone special if they wish to donate more. Students will be able to purchase a star during lunch recess. Our goal is $1,500. All stars will be displayed on a banner in the main hallway.  Show Hawthorne pride by purchasing a star.

Fidget Toys
We understand that a small number of students require fidgets during the day to help keep their focus and attention. There are a lot of students bringing the pop-it fidget toys to school and they are becoming a distraction in the classroom. Fidgets that make noise are distracting to other students. Also, some students are bringing their pop-it fidgets outside and students are beginning to argue over them. At this time, I am asking that your child leave their pop-it fidgets at home. We have found in the past that any fidget that doubles as a toy is disruptive to the classroom environment.
