Hawthorne Maker Space
"when you teach a child something you take away forever his chance of discovering it himself" Jean Piaget
In Spring 2017, Hawthorne Library was awarded a Thiems grant from the District 205 Foundation for the purchase of makerspace materials. A makerspace is, quite simply, a place where you make things. But is is also a collaborative work space inside a library for making, learning, exploring, and sharing that uses "high tech" to "no tech" tools.
At Hawthorne, our MakerSpace will be part of library lessons, in center-type format, so students can practice the 4 Cs: Creating, Collaborating, Communicating, and Critical Thinking with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Challenges will be open-ended to allow for creativity and original thinking to occur, rather than "one solution kits." Activities will involve creative outlets and assorted brain teaser puzzles. We even have a few "Breakout Boxes" that I cannot wait to use to collaborate lessons with our teachers!!
What else do we have (besides the Breakout boxes)?
Code-a-Pillars
Robot Mouse
Legos
Lincoln Logs
Magna Tiles
Pattern Blocks
Rubber stamps
Card stock
Assorted puzzles for independent and collaborative solving
Fabric scraps
Cardboard
Masking Tape
Craft sticks
Yarn
