Birthday Treats

Hawthorne has implemented a no edible treat policy for birthdays.  To celebrate your child's special day, we suggest the following no edible treats:

  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Stickers
  • Puzzles
  • Games
  • A special book for the class
  • Playground items such as a ball, jump rope, hula hoop, skip-it, or chalk

Box Tops & Labels

Please help support our school by bringing in box tops that look like the label to the right. Simply cut out the labels, mark them with our room number (205), and bring them in to me! Every box top helps the school buy educational materials for students. I appreciate your help in supporting Hawthorne!

Tricia Herward

Welcome to Fourth Grade

Welcome to fourth grade!  It is my pleasure to introduce myself.  My name is Tricia Herward, and I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher.  I am entering my fifteenth year of teaching at Hawthorne Elementary School.  I grew up in Elmhurst, attending Lincoln Elementary School, Bryan Middle School, and York High School.  I went on to study Art at the University of Kansas.  I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at DePaul University, along with my middle school endorsements in Language Arts and Art.  I earned my Masters degree from National-Louis University in 2006.  I am excited to work with you and your child this year, and I believe that together we can make a great team and have a wonderful year.

I am really looking forward to working with you as a partner in educating your child.  I know that my teaching must begin with making your child feel at home in the classroom, and with helping all of the children come together in a learning community made up of unique individuals, each with his or her own learning style, interests, history, and hopes.  My goal is to facilitate learning in an exciting and fun way.  As an educator, it is my job to help your child become a lifelong learner.  In order to achieve this, it is essential that we work together to ensure that you child is working to his/her potential in a successful and meaningful way.

I strongly believe that your child’s success in school not only depends on what I do as your child’s teacher, but also what you do as a parent to support your child throughout his/her educational experience.  An open line of communication between us will be very important to your child’s success.  When I return to school, I can be reached during the day at (630)834-4541 or by e-mail anytime at therward@elmhurst205.org

Again, I am very excited about this year and it is my hope that it will be a successful and memorable one for your child.
